watch marcpaperscissors talk about how he creates his amazing collage art...

read:

2-dimensional collage

YOU NEED
  • 1 sheet of paper
  • Colorful paper scraps
  • Glue or glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Tear and cut out creative shapes from your colorful paper. Think about cutting in zig zags or wavy patterns.
  • Arrange your colored paper scraps on the paper you've chosen to use as a background.
  • Think about how your background paper creates different designs when it works together with your arrangement of the smaller shapes.
  • Use overlapping and size to create interest.

artist feature: Henri Matisse/ france/ b.1869 d.1954/ abstract/ fauvism

extend your learning...make it 3d!

objective: students will be able to...

  • Identify sides and vertices of 3D forms: Triangle, Square, Rectangle and Sphere
  • Fold and manipulate paper to create a variety of lines and shapes
  • Identify and demonstrate the difference between 2-dimensional shapes and 3-dimensional forms

ARTIST FEATURE: MARK DI SUVERO

Walk around a real SUVERO sculpture in google street view

materials and supplies needed

Colored Paper, cut into strips of varying lengths and widths
Glue
1 piece of paper or cardboard as a base for your sculpture

TUTORIAL FOR YOUR PROJECT:

when you've finished your amazing wacky sculpture, watch this video and answer the questions about your own sculpture below...

  1. Count all of the sides your sculpture has. A side includes the top AND bottom of each paper strip.
  2. Each paper strip has two sides. Did you make more than two sides out of any of your paper strips?
  3. Find the shape you made with the most sides. How many were you able to create?
  4. An edge is created every time you create a crease in your paper strip. A vertice is created every time two edges meet. Count all of the edges you created in your sculpture. How many vertices can you count?
  5. Find the line or shape with the most edges.  Find the shape with the most vertices. Can you find a shape with no vertices?
  6. Is your sculpture 2-dimensional (flat) or 3-dimensional (you can walk around it, and it has sides)?
