MAKE SMART ART

making movies

exploring stop-motion animation

Step 1:

Watch Ok Go's Music Video, 'Primary Colors' created using 'Stop-Motion'
1. Was anything different about the way the characters in the video moved?
2. How do you think items in the video were able to appear and disappear?

Objective: What will I understand and be able to do after completing this project?

  • I will be able to plan a sequence of events, and explain sequencing in my story
  • I will be able to use my understanding of sequencing to create a stop-motion animation
  • I will be able to create simple stop-motion animation

 stop motion moviemaking Step-by-Step

you will need:
camera (ipad/phone); Paper; pencil/pen/sharpie

helpful add-ons: scissors, coloring materials, clay, stop motion moviemaking application

Step 2:

Watch some student examples of Stop Motion animation
'ABC' Stop Motion created by Alex, Gr. 6
  1. Alex used colored pencil shaving to construct each letter of the alphabet on white paper.
  2. A new photograph was taken each time the shavings moved to eventually form new letters.
  3. Alex used the app 'Stop Motion Studio' to input all of the frames and create the animation and movement for the alphabet.

Stop Motion Studio
There are a lot of free apps that are easy to use
for creating stop motion animation.
With a parent's help and permission, search for 'stop motion' in the app store to find something that works for you!
'Alien Invasion' Stop Motion created by Gabe, GR 2
  1. Gabe imagined and drew his own characters on a plain piece of paper with a black sharpie marker, then cut each of them out.
  2. Gabe used different backgrounds to tell his story and create change in time and place. (The farm scene was a painting on the wall)
  3. Gabe used an app for the ipad / iphone called 'Stop Motion Studio'. He applied different sound effects and stitched his photograph frames together with this app.
  4. Gabe created a title page in the app, added some backgrounds, and finished it with some cool music.  Ta Dah!! Stop Motion Magic

Step 3:  time to make your movie!

Visit this page on the ARTOFEDUCATION's website:
TEACHER'S GUIDE TO CREATING STOP-MOTION ANIMATION IN THE CLASSROOM
...with this guide, you get to learn how to plan like the art teacher and gather everything you need to create your movie

quick & essential tips for stop-motion

  • Smaller movements between each photograph will create smoother motion in your movie. Try to create characters that have moving arms and legs to make this easier.
  • Use different backgrounds to create changes in time and place for your characters, or set up a simple scene that remains the same while your characters move (like the Ok Go video)
  • Add some sound: Speaking for your characters, different sound effects, or some music
  • You can also add words: Speech bubbles, text overlays, writing in your scenery
  • Apps or programs that create stop motion animation with your photographs will make things much easier!
  • You can create a 3-Dimensional stop motion animation where your characters stand up and move around a 3-dimensional space (Like Ok Go's video), or your stop motion can be created on a 2-dimensional surface where your main characters move within a 2-dimensional (flat) surface area, like the student examples above.

Step 4:
when you finish your video, Consider these questions

--What were some of the challenges you had creating your movie?  How did you work through them?

--How did you come up with your idea for your stop motion animation?

--What tools did you use to create your animation? What tools would have been helpful in creating more stop motion animations?

--Do smaller movements of your characters and scenes between frames (photographs) create smoother motion, or does it look more choppy?  How can you create the most realistic-looking movement in your animation?

--Did the time or location change during your animation? What tricks did you use to create the sense of change in time and place?

'stop motion' is a cinematographic (cinema + photographic) technique where the camera is repeatedly stopped and started between movements to give figures an impression of motion

Flip books are a form of Stop Motion that uses Bookmaking as the art form instead of Film, but they are created in the same way, with the same idea. Ok Go's 'One Moment' video incorporates a flipbook that makes it appear like the lead singer is in the book singing

Ori Gersht is an Israeli photographer born in 1967. Gersht's work explores split-second moments in time. Through his photography, Gersht suspends time for his viewer, allowing us to experience and explore a moment our minds and eyes wouldn't otherwise capture.

Galloping Horse, 1878 by Photographer Eadweard Muybridge
FUN FACTS!
-->The famous Galloping Horse, 1878 was a sequence of photographs created by by photographer Eadweard Muybridge.  Muybridge set up a line of cameras with automatic shutters that tripped as a race horse passed by. Galloping Horse was created to demonstrate whether a trotting horse ever has all four feet on the ground at any point in time. This resulted in a series of images that when combined, recreated the precise positions and movement of a horse in motion. Muybridge has been celebrated as the 'Father of Motion Pictures,' and Galloping Horse last sold at auction for close to $500,000

here are some more artists whose famous works represented or captured a sense of motion...

Chopsticks
Spoons

Extend your learning & Fun with more activities!

  • Suspend Time and Capture a Split Second... Find a partner. One of you will photograph the moment, the other will create the moment. You can use your body to jump, cartwheel, handstand, etc. (outside of course!) but try to capture it in the air. You can also use other objects around the house... make sure you ask your parents and caregivers before you start moving things around!
  • Capture the Cause and Effect of liquid being disrupted. Try dropping different sized objects (non-breakable) into a plastic or metal bowl with water in it. Try to capture the moment the object hits the surface of the water and starts to disrupt it.  (A secret trick on the iphone camera is to hold the photo button down to capture a sequence of fast frame shots just like Muybridge's galloping horses...start holding the button as the object is dropped, and keep holding it until the water completely calms down again.  You can also use food coloring like Ok Go in their experiment below!
