Counting with Wayne Thiebaud by Susan Goldman Rubin, Published by Chronicle Books 2007
Students are introduced to the art of Wayne Thiebaud as they count their way through  pastel patterns and colorful sweets all in rows. This is a fantastic book for beginning readers and curious young artists.

Available HERE from our favorite local King's English Bookshop
*(Nothing comes back to me from my book recommendations beyond encouraging the love of books and  supporting local businesses who are working hard to support education)

1. Divide 1 piece of paper into 4 sections.
2. Use paints to add a different color (flavor) to each section.
3. Use crayons or oil pastels to add sprinkles and other ingredients to your ice cream flavors
4. On the unpainted back side of your painted paper, use a crayon to draw the outline shape of a scoop of ice cream (Make a big rainbow and then add a wavy line along the bottom) Cut out each of your scoops.
8. On the bottom of the second piece of paper, draw an upside-down triangle for the cone.
9. Build your ice cream cone by placing your first scoop on the cone. Keep overlapping each scoop until your cone is complete.
Admire your colorful artwork!!

OVERLAPPING
is a technique that artists use to create the illusion of depth in their artwork.

OVerlapping to explore color mixing:

Picture
  1.  Find something you can use to trace a circle. On a piece of paper, use a pencil or crayon to trace circles in a line that don't overlap with each other.
  2. Use watercolor paints to paint each circle with a different color of the rainbow.
  3. On a second piece of paper, trace your circles. This time, make sure that the circles overlap with each other.
  4. Use your paints to color in each circle with different colors.
  5. Notice what happens to your colors when they overlap with each other. Do they stay the same? Does one color cover up another? Do the two colors mix to make a new color?

compare & contrast:
