MAKE SMART ART

the middle ages

exploring medieval castles

castle building Step-by-Step

Step 1:

Visit this webpage to learn more about medieval castles and their features. https://www.dkfindout.com/us/history/castles/

Step 2:

Watch the following video about how castles were built and why...

Step 3: create a blueprint to scale

You're the Ruler of a Medieval City. The city can be from an imaginary place, or from a real historical place. You get to design your own castle and build a miniature model that includes all of the details and features you would want.

->On a piece of paper, measure 1 inch columns and 1 inch rows. Connect the columns and rows to create a grid for your blueprint. (A blueprint is a detailed plan on paper for an architectural structure -a house, building, bridge, etc.)
->Create a Blueprint of your castle design to scale using the following proportions:  1 square inch of grid = 10 square feet in final form.

if you would like some resources for your blueprint and building, look at this tiny house project from 4th grade...

Step 4: Consider these questions

What is Architecture?
Humans once lived in caves or mud huts. How has architecture changed over time?
What has allowed architecture to shift and change over time?
Why is it important to preserve historical architecture?
Have you noticed examples of historical architecture in your city?

Objective: What will I understand and be able to do after completing this project?

  • I will be able to identify the diameter and radius of a cylinder
  • I will be able to calculate the circumference of a cylinder
  • I will be able to measure and graph a blueprint to scale for a tiny castle
  • I will be able to construct a tiny castle using various attachment and construction techniques

Falling Water, Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright/ architect/ America/
b.1867 d.1959

Frank Lloyd Wright was an architect who designed over 1,000 structures over his career (532 were completed). Wright was also an interior designer, writer and educator. He was a leader in the 'Prairie School Movement,' when architects rejected European influence in their designs, (think columns and carved details) and were inspired by the natural, open features in the American landscape. It was important to Wright that his designs didn't alter the landscape around them, but integrated into their environment, and honored it. Falling Water is Wright's most famous private home structure. You can take a 3D tour of Falling Water below...
The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation has launched a 6-week course for you to learn and explore design through fun projects inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. You can access this course HERE!

FUN FACTS!
Modern technology in building and construction materials has allowed architects to design structures that are suspended in the air from cables supported by a few pillars buried deep in the ground instead of being built entirely on a concrete foundation underground!
